Walman expected to sit again as Oilers visit Islanders
Edmonton’s defenceman is facing a second straight healthy scratch as Mike Babcock stresses accountability.
Jake Walman is expected to remain out of the Edmonton Oilers’ lineup for Saturday’s game against the New York Islanders, the Associated Press reported Friday.
The defenceman was a healthy scratch for Wednesday’s 4-0 victory over Calgary after playing just over 13 minutes against Detroit on Monday. Coach Mike Babcock said Friday that he would meet with Walman again to discuss his situation.
Mattias Ekholm and Leon Draisaitl told the AP that the coaching staff’s decisions reinforced the need for players to earn their place. Both said they wanted to support Walman as he worked to get back into the lineup.
In the Oilers’ official preview of Saturday’s game, Draisaitl said the players had asked for accountability from the coaching staff. Babcock said Edmonton was still working on combining effort with structure as it opened a three-game road trip.
