Edmonton erased a two-goal deficit in the third period and defeated Carolina 6-5 in a shootout at Rogers Place on Thursday. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins supplied the shootout’s only goal in his first appearance of the season.

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl each produced two goals and three assists. Nugent-Hopkins also contributed a goal and an assist during regulation.

Carolina led 4-2 entering the third. McDavid cut that margin 26 seconds into the period, and Draisaitl brought Edmonton level on the power play at 2:51. Juuso Valimaki restored the Hurricanes’ lead with 2:40 left.

After Zach Hyman had an apparent goal disallowed for a high stick, McDavid tied it with 1:28 remaining. His pass toward Draisaitl went in off Jesperi Kotkaniemi’s skate.

Seth Jarvis scored in his season debut for Carolina. Jackson Blake, Sebastian Aho and Logan Stankoven also scored for the Hurricanes. Devon Levi made 22 saves for Edmonton, while Brandon Bussi stopped 16 shots for Carolina.
