Red Wings open to prospects and picks for Edvinsson, Sportsnet reports

Detroit would consider a package of prospects and draft picks for unsigned defenceman Simon Edvinsson, Sportsnet's Frank Seravalli reported Wednesday, Oct. 7, citing sources. NHL-ready players remain the Red Wings' preferred return, according to the report, but other clubs were told over the weekend that a suitable offer built around future assets could be considered.

The report adds to the negotiations surrounding Edvinsson. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported Monday, Oct. 5, on 32 Thoughts: The Podcast that Detroit had made longer-term contract offers while remaining open to a shorter bridge deal. Friedman also said the Red Wings had explored Edvinsson's trade market while telling other clubs that signing him remained their priority.

Friedman reported Saturday that Edvinsson would prefer a trade. Neither the player's agent nor Detroit commented on that reported preference. The reports describe negotiations; no new contract or trade has been announced.

Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff said Friday that the club was working with Edvinsson's representatives. “He remains a priority,” Horcoff said, according to Sportsnet. He said Detroit wanted to keep the negotiations private until they were concluded.

Edvinsson had returned to Sweden by Wednesday, Sept. 30, and did not practise with Detroit the following day, Sportsnet reported. Earlier, he had taken part in Detroit's first training-camp practice on Sept. 17 without a contract, sitting out the full-contact scrimmage, according to the league's website.

Detroit chose Edvinsson sixth in the 2021 draft. Last season he recorded nine goals and 16 assists in 72 games, according to the league's website.
