Wilson Posts Three Points as Capitals Beat Penguins 5-3

Tom Wilson had a goal and two assists in Alex Ovechkin's final home opener at Capital One Arena, and Washington scored first and never trailed.

Tom Wilson contributed to three Washington goals as the Capitals won 5-3 against Pittsburgh at Capital One Arena on Wednesday, Oct. 7, in Alex Ovechkin’s final NHL home opener.

Wilson scored once and supplied two assists. Pierre-Luc Dubois added a goal and an assist, while Logan Thompson stopped 27 shots. Washington improved to 2-1-0; Pittsburgh fell to 2-2-0 despite 22 saves from Arturs Silovs.

Anthony Beauvillier opened the scoring after 23 seconds. Bryan Rust equalised at 1:19 in his first appearance of the season, before Wilson restored Washington’s lead at 11:51.

Second-period goals from Dubois and Alex Tuch stretched the advantage to 4-1. Pittsburgh answered through Tommy Novak and Nick Robertson to enter the final period one goal behind.

Ryan Leonard’s power-play goal at 3:55 of the third gave Washington its final two-goal margin.
