Sirens Add Jim Midgley as Assistant Coach

The New York Sirens named Jim Midgley an assistant coach on August 24, adding him to head coach Greg Fargo's staff ahead of the 2026-27 PWHL season. Midgley, 48, spent the previous two seasons as an assistant with the Toronto Sceptres.

"His impressive coaching journey across the PWHL, Team Canada, the CHL, and the NHL with the New York Rangers reflects not only an exceptional level of experience, but also a deep commitment to developing people and contributing to an elite environment," Sirens general manager Pascal Daoust said in a statement.

Midgley was an assistant with the Rangers for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, working under head coach Gerard Gallant. The league says the hire makes him the first coach to hold bench roles in both the PWHL and the NHL. He also served as an assistant for Canada at the 2021 IIHF Women's World Championship, where the team won gold, and has scouted for the Philadelphia Flyers.

Before joining Toronto in 2024, Midgley spent the 2023-24 season as head coach of the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, his second stint leading the club. Halifax went 42-18-7-1 that season and finished atop the Maritimes Division. His first turn as Mooseheads head coach came in 2017-18, following six seasons as an assistant in Halifax from 2011 to 2017, a run that included a Memorial Cup in 2013.

Midgley fills the vacancy created when Josh Sciba left the Sirens this offseason to become the first head coach of the league's expansion Detroit franchise.

New York finished seventh among the PWHL's eight teams in 2025-26 with 36 points, eight behind fourth-place Ottawa for the final playoff berth. The Sirens enter their fourth season still seeking a first postseason appearance. Midgley joins returning assistant coach Valérie Bois and goaltending and video coach Gordon Woodhall on Fargo's staff.
