Schmaltz has three points as Mammoth beat Devils 5-3

Nick Schmaltz extended his season-opening goal streak to four games in a 5-3 Utah win in Newark, but Mikhail Sergachev left with an injury.

Nick Schmaltz contributed a goal and two assists as the Utah Mammoth defeated the New Jersey Devils 5-3 at Prudential Center on Tuesday, Oct. 6. He has scored in each of Utah's first four games and has five goals and two assists this season.

Schmaltz broke a 2-2 tie with a power-play goal at 12:05 of the second period. He later supplied the pass for Vincent Trocheck's goal at 16:52 of the third, which restored Utah's two-goal advantage. It was Trocheck's first goal for the Mammoth since arriving from the New York Rangers in July.

Clayton Keller had a goal and an assist, and Mikhail Sergachev collected three assists. Karel Vejmelka stopped 30 shots as Utah improved to 3-1-0. The Mammoth converted two of four power plays.

Sergachev left with 29 seconds remaining in the second period after a clearing attempt by teammate MacKenzie Weegar struck him near his left ear. Weegar and Lawson Crouse also scored for Utah.

Luke Evangelista scored both of New Jersey's first two goals, including one on a five-on-three power play. Jesper Boqvist scored at 9:49 of the third period in his season debut to bring the Devils within 4-3. Jake Allen made 26 saves for New Jersey, which fell to 1-2-0.

Devils defenceman Jonas Siegenthaler left with a lower-body injury after falling at 3:50 of the third period and did not return.
