Report Lists Full AHL Season as Median Outcome for Cootes

The Athletic lists a full 2026-27 season with the Abbotsford Canucks as the median outcome for Braeden Cootes, who can be assigned to the AHL at 19 under the revised NHL/CHL transfer rules.

The new exception covers 19-year-old CHL prospects who were selected in the first round and are entering their second major-junior season after being drafted. Vancouver selected Cootes 15th overall in 2025 and signed the centre to a three-year, entry-level contract in 2025. He played three NHL games last season before returning to junior, so Abbotsford would be his first AHL assignment rather than the start of his professional career.

The Athletic's Sept. 15 breakdown of when Vancouver's top prospects may reach the NHL describes the AHL as demanding competition for a 19-year-old but potentially the best route for Cootes' development and the Canucks' rebuild. A strong year in Abbotsford, the report says, would give him an inside track to a full-time NHL job in the fall of 2027. It also leaves open a shorter NHL opportunity this season if he has an exceptional camp.

The projection followed a two-game Prospects Showcase against Seattle at Rogers Forum in Abbotsford. The Canucks' official recaps said Cootes' line stood out in the opener, then named him the third star after he scored in a 5-2 win Sunday. The Athletic found that his pace and work rate stood out even though he did not control the weekend from start to finish, while cautioning that showcase results do not map neatly to NHL outcomes.

Vancouver's training camp begins Sept. 17 and runs through Sept. 20 in Penticton. Camp and the preseason will give Cootes his next chance to make a case for an immediate NHL role before the organization decides his assignment.
