Marc-Edouard Vlasic says he is done playing, without formal retirement

The former Sharks defenceman describes himself as semi-retired after 19 NHL seasons with San Jose.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic says he does not plan to resume his NHL career, although he has not formally retired. The former San Jose Sharks defenceman discussed his status with reporters on Tuesday, according to Sportsnet and San Jose Hockey Now.

"I’m done, yeah," Vlasic said. He described himself as "semi-retired" and said his retirement was not official.

Vlasic, 39, played his entire 19-season NHL career with San Jose. He last appeared in 2024-25, finishing with three points in 27 games. The Sharks placed him on waivers for a contract buyout in June 2025.

He played 1,323 regular-season games for the Sharks and recorded 379 points, with 84 goals and 295 assists. NHL.com’s report on the buyout lists him as the franchise’s career games leader among defencemen.

Vlasic told reporters he is enjoying life as a full-time father. Asked about returning to hockey in another role, he said it was too soon to decide.
