Dobes takes costly overtime penalty as Canadiens lose to Sharks
The Montréal goaltender was penalized for interference 20 seconds before Macklin Celebrini ended the game, after a night of key saves.
Jakub Dobes was called for interference on Collin Graf at 1:53 of overtime Tuesday, and Macklin Celebrini scored on the ensuing power play 20 seconds later to give San Jose a 4-3 win over the Montréal Canadiens at Bell Centre.
The penalty ended a night in which Dobes had made important stops to protect a lead, including a save on Graf in the second period and another on Will Smith after San Jose cut the margin in the third. He finished with 26 saves.
Sportsnet reported that Dobes was not available to speak with reporters after the game. Cole Caufield acknowledged the attention surrounding his goaltender, saying, "It's definitely a lot of the outside noise that he might be dealing with."
Dobes had returned to the crease after Jacob Fowler helped Montréal beat Buffalo on Saturday. Sportsnet reported that he had previously gone three consecutive games without a start as Fowler took over.
Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis said the team needed to make better decisions with a two-goal lead in the third period. Montréal led 3-1 before allowing San Jose to force overtime.
