Dylan Larkin marked his season debut with a goal and an assist as Detroit defeated Ottawa 5-3 at Little Caesars Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 6. The Red Wings earned their first victory after two regulation losses.
Larkin's return followed an offseason trade request. The crowd booed his early shifts but cheered after he scored in the first period, ESPN reported.
Larkin had missed both games with an upper-body injury. Detroit activated him from injured reserve Tuesday, and his goal at 13:14 of the opening period put the club ahead 2-1.
Alex DeBrincat scored twice and added an assist. Viktor Arvidsson contributed a goal and an assist, Lucas Raymond had three assists, and John Gibson stopped 22 shots.
Tim Stützle opened the scoring, but DeBrincat answered 32 seconds later. After Larkin gave Detroit the lead, Arvidsson scored on the power play at 2:01 of the second period and Justin Faulk extended the advantage to 4-1 at 4:30.
Drake Batherson's power-play goal reduced Ottawa's deficit before William Eklund made it 4-3 at 10:30 of the third period. DeBrincat's empty-net power-play goal with 50 seconds remaining ended the comeback attempt. Samuel Ersson finished with 31 saves for the Senators, who fell to 2-1-0 through 3 games.
William Wallinder earned his first NHL point on the primary assist for Faulk's goal in his debut. He logged 9:07, finished plus-two and blocked one shot. Carter Mazur also recorded his first NHL point with an assist.
