Canucks hire Ryan Stewart as director of hockey strategy

The Vancouver Canucks hired Ryan Stewart as Director of Hockey Strategy and Player Evaluation on Monday, general manager Ryan Johnson announced. Stewart, 52, joins the Canucks after spending four seasons as Senior Advisor of Pro Personnel with the San Jose Sharks.

Before San Jose, Stewart spent parts of 16 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks in a variety of roles, including assistant general manager, director of professional scouting, and assistant coach. He won Stanley Cups with Chicago in 2013 and 2015.

Johnson said in a statement that Stewart "brings a championship pedigree and a wealth of hockey knowledge to this brand new position." It is a newly created position that reports to Johnson, who said he will lean on Stewart internally to help provide insight and information for the front office.

With the Sharks, Stewart helped oversee the club's professional staff in North America and Europe. San Jose improved by 34 points from 2024-25, the biggest jump in the league, and missed the playoffs by four points.

Stewart is from Niagara Falls, Ont. As a player, he appeared in 325 ECHL games and recorded 69 goals and 88 assists.

The Canucks also hired Adam Sergerie as a pro scout. Sergerie spent the 2025-26 season as director of scouting for the WHL's Penticton Vees. Sergerie, 40, is from Thunder Bay and played at Lakehead. He was previously an assistant coach, general manager and president of hockey operations with the Sherwood Park Crusaders.
