Canadiens Sign Defenseman Maksymilian Szuber to One-Year Deal
Montreal adds the German blueliner, who turns 24 later this month, on a two-way contract after acquiring him from Utah in June.
The Montreal Canadiens signed defenseman Maksymilian Szuber to a one-year, two-way contract on Aug. 3, general manager Kent Hughes announced. The deal carries an $850,000 NHL cap hit, with a $135,000 AHL salary and a $175,000 guarantee, according to PuckPedia.
Montreal acquired Szuber from the Utah Mammoth on June 29 in exchange for forward Joshua Roy. Szuber, who turns 24 later this month, spent last season with the AHL's Tucson Roadrunners, where he posted 27 points (11 goals, 16 assists) in 65 games. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound defenseman led Tucson blueliners in goals and ranked third among the club's defensemen in points, per nhl.com.
Szuber has appeared in one NHL game, suiting up for the Arizona Coyotes during the 2023-24 season. Arizona drafted him 163rd overall in the sixth round in 2022. Born in Opole, Poland, he represents Germany internationally and won silver with the Germans at the 2023 IIHF World Championship. He also captured a DEL title with Munich in 2022-23.
Szuber is expected to open the 2026-27 campaign with the AHL's Laval Rocket.
The two-way structure means Szuber is paid at different rates depending on whether he is in the NHL or the AHL. He will become a restricted free agent when the contract expires in 2027.
