Bobrovsky questions interference call but backs Leafs’ video coaches
The Toronto goalie said Wednesday that he trusted the staff’s decision to leave Andrew Peeke’s goal unchallenged.
Sergei Bobrovsky remained uncertain Wednesday about the contact that preceded Andrew Peeke’s goal in Toronto’s 3-2 loss to Utah, but supported the Maple Leafs’ decision against a challenge.
Barrett Hayton collided with the Toronto goalie before Peeke scored in the second period Tuesday. The officials discussed the play and allowed the goal.
Speaking after Wednesday’s practice, Bobrovsky said the collision prevented him from making the save and that he found the interference standard difficult to understand, Sportsnet and The Hockey News reported.
Bobrovsky nevertheless deferred to Toronto’s video coaches. He said their access to multiple angles and knowledge of the rules put them in a better position to assess a challenge, while a failed attempt could leave the team shorthanded.
Coach Jim Hiller said the staff considered contact near or outside the crease unlikely to produce a successful challenge, according to Sportsnet.
