Bench management gains importance in expanded 12-team PWHL

Bench management could carry more weight in the PWHL this season as the league expands to 12 teams. The Hockey News reports that coaches and general managers expect line matching and in-game adjustments to become more important as expansion reduces established depth across the league and creates more opportunities to expose mismatches.

The home team's last-change advantage lets a coach respond after the visiting team sends out its unit. That can create opportunities to deploy top forwards against a depth line or a favorable defensive pairing.

Two change restrictions add to the tactical pressure. A team that ices the puck cannot change its players before the next faceoff. Under the PWHL's no-escape rule, players on a team assessed a penalty that puts time on the clock must also remain on the ice until after play resumes. The league introduced the rule before the 2024-25 season to encourage offense.

Those situations can leave tired or unfavorable combinations on the ice. Coaches may respond with specialized faceoff units, quicker matchup changes and earlier timeouts when a trapped group needs relief. With Detroit, Hamilton, Las Vegas and San Jose joining the league for 2026-27, those decisions will be tested across a larger range of roster constructions.
