Wolf expected back in goal as Flames visit Sharks
Calgary plays the middle game of a three-game road trip Monday night against a Sharks team that has dropped three of its last four.
The Flames play the Sharks in San Jose tonight (8 p.m. MT, Sportsnet+), looking for a response after a 5-2 loss in Colorado on Saturday.
The Avalanche top line scored four of those goals. Calgary outchanced Colorado at 5-on-5, but Mackenzie Blackwood made enough key saves to keep the hosts in control. "There's certain hard parts of the game that I felt like we needed more in tonight," coach Ryan Huska said afterward.
Dustin Wolf is likely to return to the crease. Call-up Arsenii Sergeev started in Denver, one day after joining the Flames from the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers, and made 28 saves in his second career NHL start. "I think he looked a little bit nervous early on, but then he settled in," Huska said.
San Jose enters at 7-7-1, three points ahead of Calgary in the Pacific Division. The Sharks lost 5-1 to Ottawa on Saturday, a game in which the Senators scored three times in the second period and outshot them 35-23. Michael Misa had the lone goal. "We were just slow all night. Got outworked all over the ice," coach Ryan Warsofsky said. The Sharks have won once in their last five at home and are finishing a four-game homestand.
Macklin Celebrini leads San Jose with 16 points, followed by Will Smith with 10. Jacob Trouba and Kiefer Sherwood have six points each over the past seven games.
Tonight is the first of four meetings between the clubs this season. The Flames are back in San Jose Nov. 17, and the Sharks visit Calgary Dec. 29 and Jan. 14. Calgary won three of four against San Jose last season, with Wolf in net for all three wins.
