Verhaeghe reflects on journey to 500th NHL game
The Panthers forward reached the milestone Sunday in Chicago after a career that began with a long climb through the minors.
Carter Verhaeghe played his 500th NHL regular-season game when the Florida Panthers visited the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday. He entered the game with 499 appearances, including 447 with Florida.
In an interview published by the Panthers, Verhaeghe said reaching the milestone meant more after the years he spent trying to establish himself in the NHL. He said the daily demands of the season had left him little time to think about the approaching total.
Verhaeghe said persistence through difficult stretches had helped him stay focused. Looking back at his early career, he said he would tell himself to enjoy the experience rather than concentrate only on keeping a roster spot.
He also described the relationships built in Florida as an important part of his time with the club. Verhaeghe said he wanted to remain a Panther and hoped to keep playing for as long as he could make a difference.
Coach Paul Maurice praised his combination of skating, physical competition and a quick release, particularly in the playoffs.
