Tim Stützle scored twice in the first period and added an assist as the Ottawa Senators beat the Boston Bruins 4-1 at TD Garden on Monday.

The first goal came short-handed at 7:39. Boston mismanaged the puck, Michael Amadio intercepted a pass and started a 2-on-1, and Stützle one-timed a backhand feed high to the stick side past Jeremy Swayman. He made it 2-0 at 9:22, three seconds after a Boston power play expired. He stole a pass, broke in on another 2-on-1 and fanned on his shot from the left face-off circle, but he regained the puck and beat Swayman to the short side.

Drake Batherson made it 3-0 at 1:06 of the second period, finishing a breakaway with a backhand after Stützle forced a turnover and sent him the pass. Amadio, who also had an assist, scored at 5:19 with a one-timer from the low slot off a Shane Pinto feed after a failed Bruins breakout.

James Hagens scored his second NHL goal at 3:30 of the third. Samuel Ersson misplayed the puck in the corner, and Hagens' pass for Matthew Poitras deflected in off the sliding goalie. Ersson made eight saves in his Ottawa debut after the June 26 trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Linus Ullmark stopped 10 shots through two periods before sitting out the third as the backup.

Coach Travis Green said Ullmark had tweaked something and was removed as a precaution, Sportsnet reported after the game. Late in the second period, Boston’s JJ Peterka collided with Ullmark after being tripped on a rush. Ullmark stayed in goal until the intermission and later returned to the bench. Green said he would be evaluated again.

Swayman finished with 20 saves for Boston (2-2-0 through 4 games), which went 0-for-4 on the power play. Poitras had been added to the Bruins' active roster earlier Monday.

Ottawa (2-0-0 through 2 games) plays at the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday without defenceman Jake Sanderson, who left Saturday's win in Toronto with an injury, according to NHL.com's status report. The Senators host the Philadelphia Flyers in their home opener on Thursday.
