Sharks Sign Ryan Warsofsky to Multi-Year Extension
San Jose signed its 38-year-old head coach to a multi-year extension after a 39-win season, four years removed from his Calder Cup title in Chicago.
The San Jose Sharks announced Thursday that head coach Ryan Warsofsky has signed a multi-year contract extension, keeping one of the AHL's recent championship coaches behind an NHL bench.
Warsofsky, 38, is entering his fifth season with the organization and his third as head coach. He arrived in 2022 as an assistant under David Quinn and took over when Quinn was fired, inheriting a team that went 20-50-12 in his first year in charge. This past season San Jose finished 39-35-8, four points out of a playoff spot.
The AHL crowd knows the résumé. Warsofsky went 105-47-18 as an AHL head coach and won the Calder Cup with the Chicago Wolves in 2021-22. Before that, his first head coaching job was in the ECHL, where he posted an 88-44-12 record across two seasons and reached the Kelly Cup Final. His debut NHL season remains the only year of his head coaching career, at any level, that ended below a .500 points percentage.
That development background is the through line. Sharks general manager Mike Grier gave Warsofsky a public vote of confidence after the 2025-26 season, saying he believed the coach had done a good job in San Jose. Young forwards Will Smith, Collin Graf and Igor Chernyshov all took steps forward last season, with Macklin Celebrini's emergence the biggest single reason the Sharks stopped being an easy night.
Warsofsky is one of several NHL head coaches to land a publicly announced extension in recent days, alongside John Hynes in Minnesota and Martin St. Louis in Montreal.
