Senators name Thomas Chabot their 11th captain
The 29-year-old defenceman succeeds Brady Tkachuk, with Claude Giroux, Jake Sanderson and Tim Stützle serving as alternates.
The Ottawa Senators named Thomas Chabot their captain Tuesday, making the 29-year-old defenceman the 11th player to hold the role in franchise history. He succeeds Brady Tkachuk, who was traded to the Florida Panthers after five seasons as captain.
“Thomas exemplifies everything we want in an Ottawa Senator,” president of hockey operations and general manager Steve Staios said in the club's announcement. “He's committed to the city and to the organization. He puts the team first.”
Chabot said Ottawa feels like home: “We bought our first house here. We started our family here. Becoming captain here is a huge honour.”
The Senators selected Chabot 18th overall in the 2015 NHL Draft. He has spent his entire NHL career with Ottawa, recording 335 points (78 goals, 257 assists) in 569 regular-season games.
Claude Giroux, Jake Sanderson and Tim Stützle will serve as alternate captains. Ottawa opens its regular season Saturday at Toronto.
