What's newSeattle activated Mackie Samoskevich for his Kraken debut and placed Jacob Melanson on injured reserve.

The Seattle Kraken visit the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, Oct. 3, looking to build on their 6-1 opening win in Calgary. Seattle's official preview lists a 4 p.m. start in its broadcast market.

Mackie Samoskevich was activated for his Kraken debut after practising on Seattle's fourth line Friday. Jacob Melanson was placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, opening a roster spot. Coach Lane Lambert said Saturday that Melanson might miss the next three games.

The Kraken's preview credits the Calgary win to disciplined play as well as pace. Seattle avoided third-period penalties, while the line of Berkly Catton, Shane Wright and Ryan Winterton supplied energy.

Seattle scored six seconds into its first power play, with Jordan Eberle finishing a chance created by a Jared McCann shot after Chandler Stephenson won the faceoff. Its next four opportunities produced five shots. Coach Lane Lambert said quicker puck movement and a greater willingness to shoot could improve the unit.

Edmonton has scored 14 goals and allowed 13 in two games against Vancouver, losing 6-5 in overtime before winning 9-7. Evan Bouchard has eight points, and the Oilers have converted three of nine power plays.

The Kraken's preview projects Devon Levi in Edmonton's net and Philipp Grubauer for Seattle, while making clear that neither starter is confirmed. Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins remain out for the Oilers.
