Shane Pinto delivered the decisive attempt in a shootout as Ottawa earned a 2-1 home victory over the New York Islanders on Thursday, Oct. 15. Neither team’s other shooters converted, leaving Pinto’s finish against Semyon Varlamov as the difference at Canadian Tire Centre.

The Senators moved to 6-2-0 with their fourth victory in five games. New York’s record stands at 3-3-1. Linus Ullmark turned aside 20 shots for Ottawa, while Varlamov finished with 18 saves.

Matias Maccelli gave the Islanders a 1-0 advantage at 19:48 of the first period. He took the puck away from Pinto near the blue line before scoring on Ullmark. Maccelli has points in five consecutive games, with two goals and four assists during that run, according to the NHL’s game report.

Ridly Greig brought Ottawa level at 15:43 of the second. Artem Zub started the play with a pass to Warren Foegele, who found Greig on a two-on-one for the finish.

Ottawa had already seen two apparent first-period goals erased. Video review found that Foegele’s attempt struck the crossbar without entering the net. A subsequent Islanders challenge wiped out Stephen Halliday’s goal because of an offside entry.

The teams remained tied through the third period and overtime. Each had an overtime power play, but neither found a winning goal before Pinto settled the contest in the shootout.
