Penguins appoint Ted Towne as chief financial officer

Pittsburgh adds the former Washington Nationals finance executive after hiring Marcel Braithwaite to lead business operations.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have appointed Ted Towne as chief financial officer, owner Hoffmann Family of Companies announced Tuesday, Oct. 20.

Towne spent nearly two decades with the Washington Nationals and most recently held the same finance role at the MLB club. In 2025, he also temporarily took responsibility for revenue and marketing, expanding his remit to 12 departments.

His work in Washington included negotiations on the 2025 extension of the Nationals Park lease, along with concessions and retail agreements. Earlier in his tenure, he worked on player contracts and acquisitions as assistant general manager and vice president of finance.

Towne also led Washington's successful bid to stage the 2015 NHL Winter Classic at Nationals Park, according to the Penguins' announcement.

The appointment follows Pittsburgh's hiring of Marcel Braithwaite as president of business operations. Braithwaite joined the Penguins from the Houston Astros.
