Ryan Johnson is heading to Pittsburgh in a trade that sends Caleb Jones and Daniel Laatsch to Buffalo. The Penguins and Sabres announced the exchange Monday.

Johnson, 25, carries an $875,000 average annual contract value through the 2027-28 season, according to Pittsburgh. Buffalo selected him 31st overall in the 2019 draft. He has seven assists in 47 NHL appearances; all seven assists came during his 41-game rookie season in 2023-24.

The defenceman began this season with Rochester, Buffalo’s AHL affiliate, playing four games. Pittsburgh’s announcement lists his AHL career totals at seven goals and 41 points in 153 games.

Buffalo adds two left-shot defencemen. Jones, 29, has played 255 NHL games and opened this season with three points in four games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Laatsch, 24, appeared in 10 AHL games last season, the Sabres said.
