Ovechkin Returns to Capitals for Record 22nd Season

Alex Ovechkin is coming back. The Capitals announced July 2 that their captain signed a one-year contract extension, returning for a 22nd season with the franchise that drafted him first overall in 2004. The deal pays $1 million in salary, a $3.25 million signing bonus, and a $4.75 million games-played bonus if he suits up for 10 games, with a cap hit of $4.25 million.

"I'm back!" Ovechkin said in the team's announcement. "I'm healthy. I love playing hockey and competing to win. I'm excited to come back and join my teammates so we can fight for a playoff spot and have a chance to win."

Ovechkin, who turns 41 in September, will match Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio, Stan Mikita, Steve Yzerman, and Sidney Crosby as the only players in NHL history to play 22 seasons with one franchise. He will also surpass Walter Johnson (21 seasons with the Washington Senators, 1907-1927) as the longest-tenured athlete in Washington, D.C. professional sports history.

The decision came after Washington missed the playoffs last season but aggressively retooled its roster this offseason. The Capitals acquired forwards Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch in separate trades on June 23 and 24, then signed forward Boone Jenner to a four-year, $23 million contract and defenseman Vincent Desharnais to a four-year, $16.8 million deal when free agency opened July 1.

Ovechkin is the NHL's all-time leader in goals with 929, plus 758 assists for 1,687 points in 1,573 career games. He captained Washington to its only Stanley Cup in 2018 and has served as captain for 17 seasons. Owner Ted Leonsis said the organization wanted Ovechkin to remain a Capital for life, whether he continued playing or transitioned to another role with the team.

Ovechkin remained noncommittal about whether this will be his final season, saying only that his wife suggested "one more year, or maybe two years, I don't know."
