What's newMarchenko scored on a first-period power play in his first game back in Columbus.

Kirill Marchenko scored a power-play goal in his first game back in Columbus with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

Marchenko redirected Auston Matthews' pass past Jet Greaves at 8:16 of the first period, bringing Toronto level at 1-1. It was his fifth goal of the season.

Before the game, Marchenko had said he was unsure how Blue Jackets fans would welcome him back. He asked to leave Columbus before the season and has declined to explain his reasons.

Speaking after Monday's win over San Jose, Marchenko expressed appreciation for the Columbus supporters but said their response was beyond his control. His priority, he told reporters, was his own play.

The Blue Jackets planned to acknowledge Marchenko during the first period without a video tribute, TSN reported before the game. Defenceman Zach Werenski said Marchenko had been popular with the fans but expected some frustration over his departure.

Toronto acquired Marchenko in the deal that sent Matthew Knies to Columbus. Tuesday's game also marked Knies' first meeting with Toronto since the trade. Marchenko spent four seasons with Columbus before moving to Toronto.
