Kucherov says communication prompted his Lightning trade request
The winger discussed his request after Monday’s practice, while Tampa Bay has said it intends to keep him.
Nikita Kucherov attributed his request to leave the Tampa Bay Lightning to his dealings with management, rather than financial terms, when he spoke after Monday’s practice, Sportsnet reported.
The winger said he had spoken with general manager Julien BriseBois twice over four months. He described the problem as “poor communication and respect” and said BriseBois had told him he could leave July 1.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Friday that Kucherov had told the club and his teammates he would not sign another contract and wanted a trade. Tampa Bay responded that it had no intention of moving him.
Asked Monday about remaining with the Lightning beyond this season, Kucherov pointed back to his request. He nevertheless said he would keep working to help his current teammates win.
Brandon Hagel also expressed confidence in Kucherov’s commitment to the group, according to Sportsnet’s account of comments to Lightning reporter Benjamin Pierce.
Kucherov described his attachment to the organisation that drafted him and to the place where his children grew up. He said he remained grateful for his years in Tampa Bay.
