Jack Hughes finished a pass from Jesper Bratt at 3:23 of overtime to give the New Jersey Devils a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers at Prudential Center on Thursday, Oct. 1.

After scoring, Hughes threw his stick over the glass. NHL.com reported that a fan named Zach, from North Caldwell, New Jersey, caught it while wearing a Hughes USA jersey. Hughes said he had not aimed at a particular spectator.

“So fun to do that again,” Hughes told NHL.com. Coach Sheldon Keefe said he missed the toss while watching a replay of the winning goal.

His brother Luke had brought New Jersey level at 2-2 with a shot from the high slot at 9:44 of the third period, assisted by Luke Evangelista. The win opened the Devils' regular season.

Philadelphia led twice. Rasmus Ristolainen redirected Travis Sanheim's point shot at 11:12 of the first period. Dougie Hamilton answered for New Jersey at 17:58 of the second, but Sanheim restored the Flyers' lead at 5:33 of the third on a setup from Sean Couturier.

Joseph Woll made 41 saves in his first game with Philadelphia. Jake Allen stopped 23 shots for New Jersey, which did not score on four power-play opportunities.

The Flyers took their first point of the season after Wednesday's 7-0 loss to Pittsburgh. All four regulation goals on Thursday came from defencemen.
