Dylan Garand picked up his first NHL shutout on Friday, stopping 22 shots as the New York Rangers beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 at Little Caesars Arena and spoiled Detroit's season opener.

It was Garand's fourth NHL game. He went 2-0-1 in three appearances late last season. New York was playing its third game in four nights to open the year, and the win follows a 5-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday. The Rangers are 2-1-0.

Sean Durzi gave them the lead with a power-play goal at 5:12 of the first period, his first with New York since being acquired from the Utah Mammoth on July 1 in the Vincent Trocheck deal.

Detroit's John Gibson made 19 saves. Defenceman Anton Johansson, making his NHL debut, hit the post later in the first period. The Red Wings put 20 shots on net through two periods but managed only two in the third.

Eeli Tolvanen sealed it with an empty-net goal at 18:44, his second of the season.
