Capitals face Dallas defensive test on Tuesday

Washington continues its homestand against a Stars team leading the NHL in goals allowed per game.

The Washington Capitals host Dallas on Tuesday in the second game of their three-game homestand, facing a Stars team allowing a league-low 2.14 goals per game, according to Washington’s official preview.

Dallas also leads the NHL in shots allowed per game at 22.3, faceoff percentage at 55.6 and penalty killing at 93.6 per cent. Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said Washington would need to apply lessons from Sunday’s 5-1 loss to Minnesota against another strong defensive opponent.

Washington trailed Minnesota by two goals early but stayed within one until the final minutes. Carbery said the Capitals needed to put more of their opportunities on target.

Defenceman Timothy Liljegren missed Monday’s practice for a maintenance day, the club reported. Dallas arrives after beating Columbus 3-1 at home on Saturday.
