Trent Whitfield Named Providence Bruins Head Coach

The Boston Bruins named Trent Whitfield the 14th head coach of the Providence Bruins on Monday, July 27, promoting him after 10 seasons as an assistant with the AHL club.

Whitfield, 49, helped Providence compile a 396-203-48-28 record during his tenure on the staff, including four Atlantic Division titles and the league's best regular-season mark in 2025-26 at 54-16-2-0. The team captured the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy that season for posting the AHL's top record.

"We are excited to announce Trent Whitfield as head coach of the Providence Bruins," Boston general manager Don Sweeney said in a statement. "Over the past 10 seasons, Trent has established himself as a highly successful coach, and we are confident that he is ready for this opportunity."

The job came open when Ryan Mougenel left to join Manny Malhotra's staff with the Vancouver Canucks. Mougenel went 217-103-40 in Providence since taking over in 2021-22 and won the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Trophy as the AHL's coach of the year.

Before joining Providence in 2016, Whitfield served as an assistant with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League in 2015-16 and the Portland Pirates of the AHL in 2014-15.

As a player, Whitfield skated in 812 AHL regular-season games with Providence, Peoria and Portland, totaling 247 goals and 349 assists for 596 points. He captained the P-Bruins from 2009 to 2013 and played in the AHL All-Star Classic in 2003 and 2013. He also appeared in 194 NHL games with Boston, St. Louis, Washington and the New York Rangers, recording 11 goals and 18 assists for 29 points, and he skated in 18 Stanley Cup Playoff games, four of them with Boston. The Alameda, Saskatchewan native was selected by Boston in the fourth round (100th overall) of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.

The Bruins also added Ryan Ward to Providence's coaching staff as an assistant coach. Ward, 39, is a native of Assonet, Mass., who led the Youngstown Phantoms to the first Clark Cup in franchise history in 2022-23 and previously worked as a video coach with the New York Islanders and the Toronto Maple Leafs. He joins Ryan Bourque, who has been on the staff since last season.

Whitfield will begin his first head coaching job at any level when the 2026-27 AHL season opens Oct. 2.
