Easton Cowan finished with two points and Anthony Stolarz made 26 saves as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the New York Islanders 2-1 at Scotiabank Arena on Sept. 30. The victory was Toronto’s first under coach Jim Hiller.
Toronto built its lead in the opening period. Colton Sissons scored on a deflection at 7:14, with Cowan picking up an assist. Cowan then scored on the power play at 11:55, putting in a rebound to make it 2-0.
Stolarz, who had been named the starter earlier in the day, held the Islanders scoreless through two periods. New York eventually got on the board when Emil Heineman scored shorthanded at 14:09 of the third. That left the Islanders one goal behind, but they could not find an equalizer.
Ilya Sorokin stopped 24 of Toronto’s 26 shots. The Islanders put 27 shots on Stolarz in their first game of the 2026-27 regular season.
The Maple Leafs converted one of four power plays and killed all four Islanders opportunities. Toronto improved to 1-1-0 after losing its season opener 3-2 to Montreal the previous night; New York began its season 0-1-0.
