Stars sign Casey DeSmith to two-year, $5 million extension
The 35-year-old goalie, who went 15-8-6 as Jake Oettinger's partner last season, is signed with Dallas through 2028-29.
Casey DeSmith won't be heading to unrestricted free agency next summer. The Dallas Stars signed the 35-year-old goalie to a two-year, $5 million contract on Wednesday.
The deal carries an average annual value of $2.5 million and begins in 2027-28. DeSmith is entering the final season of the three-year, $3.05 million contract he signed with Dallas on July 1, 2024.
"Extending Casey has been a priority for us, and we're excited to have him locked up for two more years," Stars general manager Jim Nill said. "He's been incredibly reliable during his time with our organization, and we are looking forward to the tandem of Casey and Jake (Oettinger) continuing to anchor our team moving forward."
DeSmith gave the Stars a heavier workload than usual last season. He played 30 games (28 starts), going 15-8-6 with a 2.43 goals-against average, a .907 save percentage and one shutout. That was his highest games total since he appeared in 38 for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2022-23.
The Penguins signed him as an undrafted free agent on July 1, 2017. Across stops in Pittsburgh, Vancouver and Dallas, DeSmith is 99-69-29 with a 2.74 GAA, a .910 save percentage and 13 shutouts in 220 regular-season games (194 starts). He is 1-2 with a 2.37 GAA and a .915 save percentage in five Stanley Cup Playoff games (three starts).
The Stars open their regular season Friday against the St. Louis Blues.
