Shesterkin scores Rangers’ first goalie goal in 5-1 win over Lightning

Igor Shesterkin scored into an empty net and made 24 saves as New York won its home opener against Tampa Bay.

Igor Shesterkin became the first goaltender to score for the New York Rangers, sending the puck into Tampa Bay's empty net to complete a 5-1 victory at Madison Square Garden on Thursday, Oct. 1.

The Rangers goalie scored unassisted at 17:26 of the third period, with 2:34 remaining. He also made 24 saves in New York's home opener.

Shesterkin is the 18th NHL goaltender credited with a goal. His was the 21st goalie goal in league history and the 19th in the regular season, according to the NHL's updated record.

Mika Zibanejad opened the scoring on the power play at 5:34 of the first period, and Pavel Dorofeyev doubled the lead at 10:51 with his first goal for the Rangers. Eeli Tolvanen and Gabe Perreault scored in the second period.

Nikita Kucherov supplied Tampa Bay's only goal. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 20 saves for the Lightning, who were playing their season opener. New York went 7-for-7 on the penalty kill and improved to 1-1-0.
