Mackie Samoskevich scored his first two goals for the Seattle Kraken, who beat the Calgary Flames 6-1 at Climate Pledge Arena on Sunday, Oct. 4.
Seattle (2-1-0) bounced back from a 3-1 loss at the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. Calgary fell to 0-3-0 a night after a 4-1 loss in Vancouver.
Calgary has scored three goals and allowed 16 through its first three games, a minus-13 goal differential. In postgame comments reported by Sportsnet, coach Ryan Huska said the Flames were failing to work together and that newcomers were trying to force plays. Frost pointed to mistakes that were leaving opponents clear paths to the net and said Calgary needed to improve its defensive play.
Samoskevich came over from the Florida Panthers in a June 21 trade for a first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and a conditional second-round pick in 2027. He signed a three-year, $11.55 million contract ($3.85 million average annual value) on July 1.
Berkly Catton opened the scoring at 2:22 of the first period, finishing a 3-on-2 rush with a wrist shot over Dustin Wolf's glove. Samoskevich made it 2-0 at 4:40, winning a race to a loose puck on a partial breakaway and sliding a backhand under Wolf. Bobby McMann followed at 7:40.
Shane Wright scored five-hole from the low slot at 11:58 of the second period, off a Catton pass. Samoskevich added his second at 19:34, roofing a wrist shot over Wolf's blocker off a pass from Matty Beniers on a 3-on-3 rush. Catton finished with a goal and an assist. Seattle's Sportlogiq postgame analysis gave the Beniers line, with Jared McCann and Samoskevich, a 58 per cent share of shot quality during 13:21 together.
Morgan Frost broke up Joey Daccord's shutout bid with a power-play goal at 14:25 of the third. Jordan Eberle answered 39 seconds later for the 6-1 final. Daccord made 32 saves, and Wolf allowed six goals on 27 shots. Seattle's postgame analysis cited Evolving-Hockey's estimate that Daccord saved 3.7 goals above expected, reflecting the quality of the shots he faced.
