Sabres Open Training Camp With 53 Players
Buffalo hits the ice Thursday with a 53-man camp roster and about two weeks to sort out the 23 who open the season in Columbus.
The Buffalo Sabres will open training camp Thursday with 53 players on the roster, the team announced.
Buffalo has about two weeks of practices, an intrasquad scrimmage and four preseason games before reducing the roster to 23 players by Oct. 1.
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is among the goaltenders in camp after going 22-9-3 with a .910 save percentage and a 2.52 goals-against average in 35 NHL games last season.
Matt Villalta, Scott Ratzlaff, Topias Leinonen and Talyn Boyko are also listed on the camp roster after spending last season primarily in the American Hockey League.
The size of the opening roster is typical for training camp, but the short schedule leaves little time for players on the fringe to earn a place before cuts begin. Buffalo opens the regular season in Columbus.
