Plano voters reject taxes for proposed Stars arena
The result leaves the city seeking another funding route for the Willow Bend project.
Plano voters rejected Proposition A on Tuesday, turning down a package of venue taxes intended to help finance a new home for the Dallas Stars at The Shops at Willow Bend. The reported election results remain unofficial.
The Associated Press reported that the taxes would have helped repay up to $700 million in city bonds for a planned $3 billion development. The arena itself carries an estimated $1 billion cost. The proposed levies covered tickets, parking, hotel stays, car rentals and professional teams using the venue.
The ballot dealt with that funding mechanism rather than permission to build the arena. FOX 4 reported that Plano officials would seek a different way to finance the project.
Under the plans described by AP, the city would own the hockey arena and the Stars would take a 30-year lease. Dallas is targeting a move in 2031, when its lease at American Airlines Center expires.
