Ovechkin introduced by his sons before final Capitals home opener
Alex Ovechkin's two young sons did the honours at Capital One Arena on Wednesday, two days after he told teammates this season will be his last.
Alex Ovechkin didn't need an introduction on Wednesday night. He got the best one anyway.
His two young sons stepped up to the microphone at Capital One Arena in their dad's Capitals jerseys before the Washington home opener against Pittsburgh. "Your captain, number eight, Alexander Ovechkin," they announced in unison.
Ovechkin patted both boys on the back, then skated onto the ice and saluted a crowd that broke into "Ovi" chants.
"It was a huge crowd. My kids announced my name. It was a special moment," Ovechkin said after the game.
It was the last home opener of his career. On Monday, Ovechkin told his teammates that his 22nd NHL season will be his last. Washington beat Pittsburgh 5-3, with Tom Wilson scoring a goal and adding two assists.
Washington took him first overall in the 2004 NHL Draft. His 929 career goals are the most in league history, and he helped the Capitals win their first Stanley Cup in 2018. He has won the Hart Trophy three times (2007-08, 2008-09, 2012-13), the Art Ross Trophy once (2007-08) and the Rocket Richard Trophy nine times.
