Gavin McKenna put Toronto ahead on a third-period power play as the Maple Leafs defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-1 at Scotiabank Arena on Monday, Oct. 19. The win ended Toronto’s three-game losing streak.

With the score tied at 1-1, McKenna collected the puck near the right face-off circle, moved into the slot and beat Yaroslav Askarov at 4:56 of the third period. Nick Paul scored into an empty net with 40 seconds remaining.

Auston Matthews contributed a goal and two assists. His power-play goal with 12 seconds left in the second period erased the lead Mason Marchment had given San Jose at 13:54 of the first.

Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 30 of 31 shots for his first home win with the Maple Leafs. Askarov finished with 29 saves on 31 shots faced; Toronto’s final goal came with the San Jose net empty.

The game also brought the first NHL meeting between the top two selections in the 2026 draft. Toronto’s McKenna, picked first, scored the winner, while San Jose’s second selection, Ivar Stenberg, had one shot in 14:27 of ice time.
