Max Domi Out Indefinitely, Will Miss Leafs Camp Opening
GM John Chayka says the winger is still dealing with complications from off-season surgery, while Chris Tanev "looks great."
Max Domi will not be on the ice when the Toronto Maple Leafs open training camp with medicals on Sept. 16.
General manager John Chayka told The Canadian Press on Sept. 11 that the 31-year-old winger remains "out indefinitely" because of complications from off-season surgery. Domi will be evaluated once the club officially reconvenes, and Chayka said the forward would address the situation publicly "at the right time in the near future."
The Maple Leafs announced on May 25 that an issue arose after Domi had a procedure to address an injury that bothered him through the 2025-26 season. The team has not disclosed the nature of either the injury or the surgery.
Domi is set to enter the third season of a four-year, US$15-million contract. He had 36 points (12 goals, 24 assists) in 80 games last season.
The news was better on Chris Tanev. Chayka, speaking on a video conference call alongside senior executive adviser of hockey operations Mats Sundin, said the 36-year-old defenceman "looks great" after being limited to 11 games in 2025-26 by various ailments.
"We never clear a player until the medicals," Chayka said. "(Tanev) will come and get his medical and be cleared to play at that point, is our expectation."
Chayka was hired in the spring after Toronto missed the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Toronto is scheduled to begin camp with medicals on Sept. 16.
