Maple Leafs Place Lorentz On Waivers, Paul Day To Day
Toronto exposed the 30-year-old forward on Thursday, the same day Jim Hiller said Nick Paul's status for the opener is uncertain.
The Toronto Maple Leafs said Thursday they were placing forward Steven Lorentz on waivers. Lorentz has spent the past two seasons in Toronto and played 71 games last year, recording seven goals and 11 assists. The 30-year-old winger is signed through 2027-28 at a cap hit of $1.35 million.
Toronto also has a health question up front. Head coach Jim Hiller told reporters Thursday that he is unsure whether Nick Paul will be ready for the season opener. Paul left Wednesday's pre-season game against the Ottawa Senators with an undisclosed injury and is considered day-to-day.
Paul, 31, was acquired from the Tampa Bay Lightning on July 1 in a deal that sent goaltender Dennis Hildeby, a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft and a third-round pick in the 2028 draft to Tampa Bay. He had 15 points (seven goals, eight assists) in 51 games in 2025-26, though he cleared 40 points in each of the two seasons before that.
