Jets set fifth Filipino Heritage Night for Nov. 8 against Lightning

Winnipeg will celebrate Manitoba's Filipino community with a new Breakaway Jersey, a menu of Filipino food and a full slate of live entertainment.

The Winnipeg Jets will host their fifth annual Filipino Heritage Night on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m., when they face the Tampa Bay Lightning. The game is a celebration of Manitoba's Filipino community, with live entertainment, Filipino food and local community groups taking part.

The centrepiece is the new Filipino Breakaway Jersey, which carries the Winnipeg Jets Filipino Heritage logo. Graphic designer Jonato Dalayoan and True North Sports + Entertainment Art Director Marc Gomez designed the logo, using symbolism and colour to reflect Filipino culture, geography and the Philippine flag. The jersey and other merchandise with the logo are on sale at Jets Gear stores and the team's online shop.

Six autographed, team-issued jerseys will be auctioned online on Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. CT to 9 p.m. CT, and will be displayed at the game. Proceeds go to initiatives that support the Filipino community.

Two-time Food Network champion Marie Mallari of Sugar Blooms and Cakes will serve her Ube Macapuno Cake at the Sweet Spot. Select concessions will offer lumpia, chicken adobo poutine, sisig tacos, a BBQ pork skewer rice bowl, a Filipino-style Jumbo Jet Dog and longanisa pizza.

The Winnipeg All Stars dance crew, DJ MaJuice and Midnight Therapy are booked for the concourse before the game and during intermissions, while pop punk trio 12/21 takes the Samsung Stage. Sher Policarpio and the Seven Oaks School Division High School Choir have the anthems, and Susie Parker and Eric Labaupa are the guest hosts. Sisler High School's CREATE program is again contributing digital media elements to the gameday presentation.

The Jets also plan to honour people and groups working in Winnipeg's Filipino community, among them the new Filipino Sports Heritage Council and youth who play for the Philippines national team. In the first intermission, Filipino youth from First Shift, a program that helps new-to-hockey families with cost and equipment, will show what they've learned.
