Hurricanes Sign Captain Jordan Staal to One-Year Extension
Carolina's Conn Smythe-winning captain is signed through 2027-28 on a bonus-heavy one-year deal.
The Carolina Hurricanes signed captain Jordan Staal to a one-year contract extension through the 2027-28 season, the team announced Tuesday night.
The deal includes a $900,000 base salary, a $4 million signing bonus and up to $5.1 million in performance bonuses.
"Jordan is not only our captain, he's the bedrock of the culture we've established in this organization," general manager Eric Tulsky said in a statement. Tulsky credited Staal's leadership and playoff performance as major factors in Carolina's Stanley Cup championship.
Staal, 38, recorded 20 goals and 36 points in 75 regular-season games last season. He added eight goals and 12 points in 19 playoff games as Carolina won the second Stanley Cup in franchise history, earning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
The Thunder Bay, Ontario, native has 318 goals and 747 points in 1,408 games across 20 NHL seasons. Pittsburgh selected him second overall in the 2006 NHL Draft, and he spent six seasons with the Penguins before joining Carolina. He won his first Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in 2009.
