Connor Hellebuyck has offered Winnipeg fans more context for his decision to seek a trade, pointing to family circumstances without describing them in detail.

Sportsnet reported Wednesday that the New Jersey Devils goalie posted a letter on Instagram. He said several factors influenced his request, including “some very challenging circumstances involving my family.”

He acknowledged fans’ disappointment and described the choice as difficult. Hellebuyck also expressed gratitude for his years in Winnipeg, where he and his family built their lives.

Hellebuyck had made his trade request public before training camp, saying at the time that leaving was the best course for him and his family. Sportsnet reported that his refusal to attend camp resulted in an unpaid suspension before Winnipeg traded him to New Jersey in October.
