Gretzky praises McDavid’s start as Oilers captain scores at record pace
Wayne Gretzky called Connor McDavid’s start remarkable after the Edmonton captain reached 44 points in 17 games.
Wayne Gretzky praised Connor McDavid’s start to the season Friday, one day after the Edmonton Oilers captain moved onto a scoring pace that would surpass Gretzky’s NHL single-season record.
Speaking at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Gretzky described McDavid’s play as “remarkable” and said he sees a captain determined to lead Edmonton to a Stanley Cup, Sportsnet reported.
McDavid has 10 goals and 34 assists in 17 games. At that rate, he would finish with about 217 points over 84 games. Gretzky set the record with 215 points for Edmonton in 1985–86 and remains the only NHL player to reach 200 in a season, which he did four times.
McDavid set his career high of 153 points in 2022–23, when he scored 64 goals and added 89 assists.
