Carolina raised its championship banner Tuesday night. Florida left Lenovo Center with two points.
Gustav Forsling scored with 4.3 seconds remaining in overtime, and the Panthers beat the defending Stanley Cup champion Hurricanes 1-0 in Raleigh in the season opener for both teams.
The winner came off a one-timer. Forsling took a pass from Carter Verhaeghe just inside the blue line and ended a game that had been scoreless through regulation and nearly all of the extra period.
Seth Jones led Florida with 28:59 of ice time and covered 4.43 miles, according to NHL EDGE. The Panthers said that was the greatest distance skated by any player across Tuesday’s five NHL games. After practice Wednesday, Jones said his legs felt good and he hoped to maintain that energy throughout the road trip and season.
Jacob Markstrom made 15 saves for the shutout in the first game of his second stint with Florida. The Panthers acquired the goaltender in a trade with the New Jersey Devils on June 30. Florida selected Markstrom in the second round (No. 31) of the 2008 NHL Draft, and he played his first four NHL seasons with the club.
Florida is seeking a return to the playoffs after missing last season. The Panthers finished seventh in the Atlantic Division, one year after winning their second straight Stanley Cup. They won the championship in 2024 and 2025.
