Canucks go 39 minutes without a shot as fans voice frustration
Vancouver managed no shots in the second period against Detroit, drawing sarcastic cheers when Jake DeBrusk finally tested the netminder.
Vancouver went 39 minutes and 14 seconds between shots on goal during Thursday’s 5-2 home loss to Detroit. The Canucks registered only five shots through two periods, including none in the second.
The drought began after Elias Pettersson scored on the power play at 7:02 in the opening period. It ended when Jake DeBrusk tested the Detroit net with 6:16 played in the third. The home crowd responded with sarcastic cheers, then cheered further attempts as the Canucks tried to generate offence.
Drew O’Connor told Sportsnet the crowd’s reaction was deserved because the players had given fans little to celebrate. Coach Manny Malhotra also questioned the team’s effort and said players needed to recognise that the performance was inadequate.
The defeat was Vancouver’s ninth in a row. Malhotra said the team’s identity reflected the attitude and effort of its players, placing responsibility on the group to improve.
