Aleksander Barkov Returns to Panthers Camp After Lost Season
Florida's captain is healthy after ACL and MCL surgery cost him the 2025-26 NHL season and the Milan Cortina Olympics.
Aleksander Barkov is back for Florida Panthers training camp one year after a serious right knee injury ended his 2025-26 NHL season before it began.
The Panthers captain spoke Wednesday at the team's media day, one day before Florida's first on-ice practice. Barkov said the decisive moment in his recovery came in May, when he returned for Finland in an exhibition against Switzerland after seven and a half months away from game action.
Barkov fell on an early shift and the surgically repaired knee held. The test allowed him to play without fear, and he went on to captain Finland to gold at the 2026 IIHF World Championship.
The injury occurred about 20 minutes into Florida's first training-camp practice on Sept. 25, 2025. Barkov tore the ACL and MCL in his right knee and underwent surgery the following day. He resumed skating within months, but Florida was out of playoff contention by the time a return became realistic.
Barkov missed the entire Panthers season and the chance to captain Finland at the Milan Cortina Olympics. He said the experience reinforced the importance of appreciating every practice, game and day with teammates.
Florida missed the playoffs after winning the Stanley Cup in 2024 and 2025. Much of that championship core returns, with Brady Tkachuk and Radko Gudas among the additions. Jacob Markstrom takes over in goal after Sergei Bobrovsky moved to Toronto.
Barkov now returns as the centerpiece of a retooled team that is trying to resume its place among the league's contenders. The Panthers open the regular season Sept. 29 at the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes.
