Lightning Reload Around Kucherov for Another Cup Run

A 50-win, 106-point season is genuinely good, but Tampa Bay has not won a playoff round since 2022, and that gap between regular-season results and postseason outcomes is the defining tension of this roster. The additions of John Carlson and Ilya Mikheyev are sensible, not transformative, and the Kucherov extension situation adds real uncertainty to what should otherwise feel like a stable situation.

Last season in review

The numbers were strong across the board. Nikita Kucherov finished second in the league with 130 points (44 goals, 86 assists), Jake Guentzel added 88 points on 38 goals, and Brandon Hagel chipped in 74 points with 36 goals. That is a top three that most teams would trade for. The team scored 290 goals and allowed only 231, a plus-59 differential that reflects a genuinely well-structured team at both ends.

Andrei Vasilevskiy won the Vezina Trophy for the second time in his career, going 39-15-4 with a .912 save percentage. The concern, as it has been for a few seasons now, is that his numbers dipped in the playoffs, and the backup situation behind him (Jonas Johansson for three seasons) was a chronic weak point. Anthony Cirelli was a Selke Trophy runner-up, which speaks to how seriously this team takes its defensive structure even with elite offensive talent up front.

The Atlantic Division sent five teams to the playoffs. Tampa finished second. They still got bounced early. That is the problem.

Carlson, 36, replaces Raddysh on the right side of the blue line and on the power play. He had 60 points in 71 games last season split between Washington and Anaheim and ranks fifth in points among active defencemen. Hildeby, 24, posted a .914 save percentage in 20 games with Toronto and should take on a genuine backup role, which is an upgrade over what Johansson provided.

The big question

What happens with Nikita Kucherov? He can become an unrestricted free agent after this season, was eligible to sign an extension July 1, and as of training camp, talks are still ongoing. Losing the reigning Hart Trophy winner and the league's second-leading scorer from last season would be a franchise-altering blow. Everything else Tampa Bay is building around assumes he stays.

X-factor

Conor Geekie is the name to watch. The 22-year-old centre is in the final year of his entry-level contract, and with Nick Paul gone, there is real opportunity in the lineup. He credited time with the Syracuse Crunch and work with skating coach Barb Underhill for sharpening his game at camp. If he can stick and produce at the NHL level, Tampa gets a cost-controlled piece at a position where they need depth.

Bold prediction

Tampa Bay finally wins a playoff round, with Vasilevskiy carrying a lighter regular-season load thanks to Hildeby, arriving in the second round healthier than he has been in years.

The outlook

The Lightning open on the road at New York on Oct. 1 with a roster that looks a lot like last year's, just older in a few spots and with better goaltending depth. The core of Kucherov, Brayden Point, Guentzel, Hagel, and Victor Hedman is still elite. Whether this group finally converts regular-season dominance into a deep playoff run depends on health, on Vasilevskiy in April and May, and on getting that Kucherov deal done before the season becomes a prolonged goodbye.
