Torrent Sign Abbey Murphy, Second Overall Pick, To Two Years
Seattle's first 2026 draft pick is under contract through 2027-28 after a record-setting final season at Minnesota.
Abbey Murphy is signed in Seattle. The Torrent announced Wednesday that the forward, taken second overall in the 2026 PWHL Draft, has agreed to a two-year Standard Player Agreement running through the 2027-28 season. She is the first of Seattle's six draft picks from the June 17 draft to sign.
"Abbey will make an immediate impact in this league with her grit, creativity, and attack mentality," Torrent general manager Meghan Turner said in the team's release. "This two-year contract gives us the ability to develop with her as she establishes her identity at this level and as we build for future seasons."
Murphy, 24, from Evergreen Park, Illinois, finished a five-year career at Minnesota with 261 points (143 goals, 118 assists) in 171 games, leaving as the program's all-time leading goal scorer and second in points. As a graduate student in 2025-26 she posted career highs of 40 goals and 66 points in 31 games, led the nation in points per game (2.13) and goals per game (1.29), and was a top-three finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award. She was also named a First Team All-American and WCHA Forward of the Year.
Internationally, she has played in the last two Olympics for the United States, winning gold at Milano Cortina 2026 and silver at Beijing 2022, plus four IIHF Women's World Championship medals.
"Getting to spend time in the city this summer, meet our fans and get a feel for the community made me even more excited to call Seattle home," Murphy said. "I can't wait to take the ice at Climate Pledge Arena with this group."
The signing gives Seattle 17 players under contract.
Seattle was announced in April 2025 as one of the league's first two expansion clubs.
