Smith scores twice, Cagnoni wins it in overtime as Sharks beat Panthers 4-3

San Jose recovered from losing a three-goal lead when Luca Cagnoni scored his first NHL goal at 3:14 of overtime.

Luca Cagnoni’s first NHL goal gave the San Jose Sharks a 4-3 overtime victory against the Florida Panthers at SAP Center on Thursday, Oct. 1. Will Smith scored twice and assisted on the winner in San Jose’s season opener.

Smith carried the puck into the offensive zone and found Cagnoni in the left circle. Cagnoni put his shot between Akira Schmid’s pads at 3:14 of overtime to end the game. Macklin Celebrini received the other assist, his third of the night.

Mason Marchment scored in his Sharks debut at 14:20 of the first period. Smith added a short-handed goal at 5:52 of the second and a power-play goal at 10:37 to give San Jose a 3-0 lead.

Eetu Luostarinen began Florida’s comeback with a power-play goal at 17:10 of the second. His second goal, at 5:01 of the third, brought the Panthers within one. Matthew Tkachuk tied the score 17 seconds later after a pass from Sam Bennett.

Yaroslav Askarov made 23 saves for San Jose. Schmid stopped 28 of 32 shots in his Florida debut.

Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov left at 8:07 of the second period after an awkward fall during a power play. Gustav Forsling was a late scratch with an upper-body injury.
